  1. the chinese call it by a different name. Vetsin or Maetsin. they treat it as a herb, and believe you me, they have BAGS of it.

and yes, some people can be alergic to it, but this is not the majority of people. how many people do you see collapse after popping a few pringles? exactly.

  2. MSG is the abbreviation for monosodium glutamate, a food additive used to enhance the flavor of foods. Studies have found that the use of MSG can make the salt or sodium content of foods very high, and salt is believed by many researchers to be a factor in high blood pressure and heart related illnesses.

It was also a stereotype that certain oriental restaurants used MSG in their cooking. When there was a public concern about MSG back in the 80's and 90's many oriental restaurants stopped using MSG as did many other restaurants. Although today you probably only see the "NO MSG" signs in the oriental ones due to the still lingering stereotype.

try googling msg. it should prove interesting.

  3. Some people (me included) have very violent reactions to MSG.

MSG is almost as common as salt in many Philippine homes and restaurants, and my allergy is one of the reasons I almost restrict myself to home cooking.

Within minutes of taking a bite or sip of MSG-infused food, I feel numbness crawling down my spine, followed by cold sweat, headache, and a general feeling of malaise.

  4. They post it because a lot of people can't eat it it makes them very sick. Gives people bad headaches and worse.

  5. here's your answer. health reasons although I was raised on Accent as a kid and I'm no worse the wear.

  6. You don't know that some (some) people get head aches or a flushed feeling after eating food that has MSG.. ???

With all the hype and publicity in the food and health media it seems odd you know nothing..

Today most Chinese restaurants (restaurants in general) catering to Caucasians will not use MSG...

It is just a simple salt

  7. Monosodium glutamate is a flavour enhancer and said to be carcinogenic. The Japanese call it ajinomoto, which I understand to mean 'more flavour'.

If cooking Cantonese style Chinese food, add a pinch of sugar - it has the same effect.

  8. For MSG, follow the link provided by Quasimodo.

If you don't read MSG in chinese restaurant, it is because there is no ADDED MSG in their dishes.

But all strong fermented food contains natural MSG, like soy or fish salsa. It is responsible for the "tasty-meaty" taste.

The MSG magnify the effect of salt, so you can have LESS sodium for the same taste.
