Why do iron tablets make your poo black?

i just started taking them ..

they havent had that effect(yet) lol

but i was just wondering why they can turn it black?

if its not black are they not working??

lols orry this is random its just when my doctor said they might i was just thinking how do they do it?

Yes, most iron pills will make your poo black, just as if you had bleeding in the gut.  Don't be alarmed.  It's harmless, unlike intestinal bleeding, which can be a sign of serious illness.

It doesn't darken your hair.

Um, I don't know about iron tablets darkening hair.  Haven't heard that one before.

Firstly, I don't know what strength iron you're taking but strong doses (over 'weak' doses of about 20mg) should only be taken after a blood test that has shown clinical anemia.  Some doses can be around 300mg.

Secondly, there can be several clinical reasons for "black poo" or "melenas" (and not everyone experiences that when taking iron tablets).  If someone presents with melenas and is taking iron tablets, you would suspect that it was being caused by oxidation of iron present in haemoglobin somewhere along the lower digestive tract.

Thirdly, remember, if you are worried about anything, don't hesitate to check with your doctor.  He/she knows your personal medical situation the best.

It is usually just undigested iron, and more common with high dosages.  Many people find a liquid iron supplement easier to tolerate and absorb, especially if taken with something high in vitamin C (citrus, strawberries, red peppers etc).  

It does not darken your hair.

i have nt heard they darken yr hair but they will make yr poo black its the excess iron not absorbed being excreted.  i had iron injections and they make yr skin go black like bruises for several weeks.
