As a global (meaning I've lived in 6 countries) observer who has been living in Italy for close to 2 years now. I would say it's just an inocent side effect of Italian culture. All you have to do to be accepted by Italians is wear some Gucci, Armani etc clothes, preferably of some obnoxious bright color like pink (only if you are a real man) NEVER take off your sun glasses specially if it is raining or night time! Never order a capuccino after noon, smoke like a chimney while posing all the time... Oh... did I forget to mention put on way too much aftershave yet don't brush your teeth... That is how too be a real italiano
