Why do kids go through a phase where they're embarrassed to be seen in public walking with their parents?

You know, like when they're walking way ahead of their parents. What's the reason?

It is due to the transition from child to adult. They want people to think they are grown up, which to them equals independence. Hence, the walking way ahead of parents. This phase is most common when a cute girl or boy is crossing their path.

I love your question! Besides the need to be independent, at a certain age, kids think their parents are old-fashioned and are not 'hip' and don't want to be seen with them.  They want to impress their friends as they search out their young adulthood.  It seems just yesterday that I was pushing my daughter in her stroller through the mall.  Now she pushes me in mine! lol

Teens want to assert their independence and walking with their parents is not the way to do that. They see teens on commercials and television and movies that do things on their own, so why can't they? When they get a bit older, anywhere from eighteen to mid twenties, it might not be so bad.

Because they think it is not cool to be seen with there parents cause probably there friend don't have to be seen with there parents.And they want to be like there friends cause they think it is cool

most kids go through this face when they suddenly want to fit in with their peer friends and realize that being with mom and dad isn't "cool" anymore. being independent is appealing to kids and walking ahead of their parents means they don't need to be with them anymore.

kids, especially teens will go through that quest for acceptance and popularity phase

It could be because they are at an age where they are trying to be independent but at the same time lack the confidence to be their own person.  They think that to be seen with a parent(s) is uncool and that they will be judged by their peers according to what mom and dad are like.
