  1. Lasix/furosemide acts by inhibiting Na/Cl reabsorption in the ascending limb of the loop of Henle. This means that the surrounding renal muedulla is less hypertonic, which means that less water is reabsorbed both here and in the collecting ducts.

Because Na/Cl reabsorption is reduced, more sodium and chloride reach the distal tubule and collecting duct. At these later points, sodium is reabsorbed in exchange for potassium - so the more sodium there is in the tubule, the more sodium is reabsorbed and the more potassium is lost. Hydrogen ions are also exchaged for the sodium, so there is a risk of alkalosis.

There's an explanation with a good diagram here:

  2. My mom was given spirolactine a water pill with potaasium supplement in it to prevent that. She ended up in a hospital from a depletion of sodium and elevation of potassium. this had happened several times after that. She was switched to lasix 40 mg and from that point on i have given her 1  8oz glass of gatorade daily. She has not had the same problems since . Its been 2 years now. Doctors need to do sodium and potassium level checks at least monthly to any patcient taking a diuretic. My moms doctor was in agreement with the gatorade fix for her  low sodium level problem and has monitored her since . levels have always stayed in balance.

  3. Furosemide is a diuretic which increases the excretion of water from the body. Like many diuretics it can cause dehydration and electrolyte imbalance, like a decrease in potassium (which is what hypokalemia actually is.)

There are some other types of diuretics which help prevent the loss of potassium, like Aldactone or Verospiron.

  4. simply put it is not a potassium sparing diuretic. it makes your kidneys work overtime and makes you pee more. some diuretics are fancier and are designed to make your kidneys leave it behind.
