Why do legal notices list "Acts of God" in their indemnifcation statements?

"Acts of God"? It makes the legal document sound ridiculous.

  1. Its a carve out usually called a force majure clause.   The thought is that a party can only insure against foreseeable occurrences.  

    All those clauses do is give the party a way to get out of the contract if market conditions or circumstances change.  It does sound a little silly but matters like a car being destroyed by a meteor strike is outside the bounds of what the insurance premiums would cover.
