Why do lemurs jump off cliffs?

Anyway, when conditions get too crowded lemmings may jump off cliffs and try to swim to a new shore. Sometimes they make it, sometimes they don't.

You're thinking of lemmings, not lemurs. And the honest-to-goodness answer is that they don't, actually. Sometimes, during migration, some lemmings will _fall_ off of cliffs, accidentally, but the idea of them charging suicidally en-masse off a cliff is a myth. A myth that was, unfortunately, perpetuated by the 1959 Disney nature documentary in which the film crew actually herded lemmings off a cliff to get footage of them jumping into the sea.
