Why do living things need water?

  1. All living things need water because all living things are made of cells and cell cytoplasm is mostly water. If an organism doesn't have enough water, then the cells are damaged. Metabolism cannot take place without the proper amount of water, and that involves how food is turned into energy and how gases are exchanged.


  2. Water is used as a solvent for just about every chemical reaction that occurs in living things.  It is also used as a reactant in many chemical reactions.  Without water, living things couldn't carry out the chemical reactions they need to survive.
