Why do mackeral have scales?

  1. Mackerel don't have scales, they are a smooth skinned fish. Ok, technically they do have scales, but they are tiny and you can barely tell they are there, that why most people filet/steak mackerel with the skin on and just don't eat the skin after cooking.

    The scales are even smaller than those on trout.


  2. The same reasons just about all fish have scales: protection and to allow a smooth flow of water over the body so they can swim with less effort (kind of like the new swimsuits they're using in the Olympics).
