Why do many human beings have such an aversion to 'scraping' noises?

e.g., the sound made by ceramics scraping against ceramics, or metals against metals.

Why is this the case?

  2. chalk on a chalkboard...I hate that - sends a shiver down my spine just thinking about it for some reason.

    even worse - stratching my nails down the chalkboard - ergh !

  3. I've never had the 'fingernail-chalkboard' aversion.  Guess I'm just abnormal that way....

  4. I have no idea. I do know that it bugs me so much when I hear a fork scraping  a plate. It just makes me cringe.
