Question:

Why do many people say that tito would have won UFC73 against rashad evans if he hadn't got a point deducted

I watched the fight for the 1st time to see what the hype was about. It was a boring fight other than the last 2 mins of the 3rd round and the first minute of the 1st round. It is clear tito took the 1st round, and rashad took the 3rd. Rashad's 3rd round win was stronger than tito's 1st round win.

The 2nd round was boredom. Tito was the aggressor but I counted 3 separate occasions where he was holding on to the fence to prevent himself being taken down and he was warned twice before a point even got deducted. I highly doubt Rashad would have submitted tito, if tito hadn't held on to the fence. But it could have been argued that rashad could have won more points if had taken him down, leading to a 2nd round victory.

Anyway, Taking all of that into account, I truly see the fight as a draw. So why are so many people not seeing a draw?

  1. Because they scored it 28-28 i think, with the point deduction which means that it would have been 29-28 without it.

  2. ricky tan has it.  winner of each round gets 10 points, loser gets 9 or less.

simply put, if you give tito one point on all three scorecards he wins.  its only mathmatics.

if you think the fight WAS even of if you dont agree with the scoring of the judges, thats cool and you are entitled to that opinion, but they only scorecards that matter were the judges that night.

and if you add one point to titos score on all three judges scorecards, he wins.

thats all people are saying and for the record your rundown of the fight is pretty good.  i just think maybe you need to look more closely at how fights are scored.

  3. It would've been close either way, but yeah - I don't think the point was deducted in a round that Tito would've otherwise won in that's what you're asking.  Tito did appear a little more dominant, but as an MMA fan you know as well as I do being dominant doesn't necessarily make an opponent the aggressor.

I would definitely think that if they have a rematch in a few years Evans will win.  Evans is still relatively an immature fighter in comparison to Tito, but once he has over twenty fights under his belt, I could see him stepping into the ranks with the likes of Chuck Liddell or Randy Couture.
