Question:

Why do many sociopaths wet the bed after age five?

I'm sure we've all heard that wetting the bed after the age of 5 is a risk factor (or whatever) for being a sociopath. Why do these go hand in hand?

  1. I don't know.. I also was a bedwetter until past 5 years old but not a sociopath...there is either a bladder infection with some kids or other children have a deep rooted issue.. something may be going on in their family.. like my parents wanted to break up and get a divorce.. that made me wet the bed.. I don't think I am a sociopath because of that.. it would affect a kid if they know mom and dad no longer want to live together.. in the end they did stay together.. but this issue or some issue like that can cause kids to wet the bed at a later age or again wet the bed when they already stopped.. it is a sign that they are suffering emotionally from something in their environment...in their daily life..  could be anything.. in rarest cases kids have a bladder infection then that is a lot easier to stop.. x*x

  2. i did that, ****, i'm a sociopath now? must...feel..no..emotions

  3. Sociopaths or sufferers of 'Antisocial personality disorder' are never diagnosed as such, aged 5 [ that would be conduct disorder, which may or may not progress to sociopathic tendencies]. We haven't "all heard" that bed-wetting is a sign of this disorder ! however since sociopaths have "Poor Behavioral Controls/Impulsive Nature " coupled with "Irresponsibility/Unreliability", it's possible to draw a very tenuous link between bed-wetting and conduct disorder. A very tenuous link ! since bed-wetting involves many different causes.

  4. It is true, that a large percentage of sociopaths and the like are bed wetters late into their childhood, however you must be certain not to make incorrect assumptions based on this.

I actually did the math to put things in perspective in my undergrad research. I don't have a copy of the research any more, but the just of it was that although a large percentage of sociopaths wet the bed (I believe something like 40% of them did until they were 8), a very very small percentage of kids who wet the bed past 8 will be sociopaths.

The numbers were in the order of 1 in 10,000 bed wetting kids older than 8 will become sociopaths. Even still, about 60% of sociopaths never wet the bed... its an interesting observation, but it has absolutely no application in predicting who a kid will grow up to be, so please don't try to apply it. Virtually all kids who wet the bed will be perfectly normal adults once they grow out of it.

Bedwetting has many causes, from sleeping too soundly, to underdeveloped bladders. Most of the time, no cause can be found, but it is, nevertheless, a very common childhood ailment. Sociopaths are not that common at all.. its a very weak correlation.

    Hope that helps!

  5. It´s also a thing evolved from police profiler´s research into violent sociopaths´ biographies: They found out that most of these criminals experienced what some of these experts refer to as the "criminal triangle" in their early childhoods - meaning at least three grave "risk factors" could have been witnessed by their parents.

For example one guy as a kid was wetting his bed, loved torturing animals and was bullying weaker kids at school. Another might have been an early arsonist, school bully and victim of sexual abuse etc.

Of course these studies do not even try to suggest that someone suffering from one of these conditions or behaviors will become a criminal, neither do I. I just wanted to contribute to the discussion.

  6. I was diagnosed as having antisocial personality disorder a while back (sociopathy).

I was not a bedwetter, and I can't recall any psychiatrist ever asking me if I was. I'm not saying that means they didn't ask me, but I don't have any memory of it if they did.

I've also never heard of these two situations going hand-in-hand. If I had to hazard a guess at why the connection could be made, it would be that as children, a lot of sociopaths had traumatic events occur to them or people around them, or their home life was highly stressful/abusive.

That could result in some psychological problems, which there are some psychological causes for bedwetting.

The bedwetting would be due to events affecting them, and those events in turn increasing the risk of the child developing into a sociopath. So it's not the bedwetting itself going hand-in-hand with sociopathy, but instead the causes of bedwetting.

  7. I've read this as well. I don't think anyone understands the correlation between the two.
