Maps are great tools that helps us orient ourselves on a street, in a city, in a country, on the planet, etc. like for directions.

Some maps also show landforms like mountains and bodies of water like rivers and oceans. These maps are called topographic maps.

People who forecast the weather use weather pattern maps. Studying cloud patterns can help a person predict when and where the next storm will hit. People who study earthquakes look at maps of plates in the earth's crust.

What about the floor-plan?This type of map shows the size and names of the rooms in a building. An office building floor plan shows which company works in what office. When houses are built, their floor plans show which room is the kitchen, which rooms are the bedrooms, and so on.  They can also show where electrical outlets and telephone jacks are. Electricians use these floor plans to connect your electrical appliance.

Imagine no maps indicating political boundaries.

Imagine a group of people building a new highway overpass with ramps etc if there was no map (visual directions) for them to follow.

There are all sorts of types of maps and each one is very important to the person using it. Mining company always have maps showing the various tunnels and how and where they connect - very important if there was a mining disaster. Fire fighters and  ambulance - imagine not having a street map in the case of an emergency. Surveyors trying to survey a rural area without the blueprint of your farm. Do you watch the weather network at all? Imagine no maps to show us the weather patterns and the cities plus temperatures etc.
