Why do men have double standards about what they want from women?

It seems like men don't like women who are too clingy and needy and they also don't like it when a woman is too independent and doesn't need them? Can women ever win in a relationship? What the h**l do men really want or do they even know themselves?

I agree. If I said that I wanted a man to support me until I dropped so I would never have to work or have my own bank account, they'd have plenty of grounds on which to vilify me. Instead, I say that I don't want a man's money for any reason, and they vilify me anyway.

I think a happy medium perhaps. Knowing that they are valued and needed and yet not being smothered.

If all the men are one way or something - common denominator time = you, therefore you need fixing not them. (disagree? why fix the world (impossible, beyond control) when you can fix yourself (possible, within control)).

I guess we just want a comfortable medium between those two extremes. I mean, no one wants to be nagged all the time and pestered all the time by a needy person. But also, no one wants a girlfriend that acts like she doesn't need or care about them.

It's just like a lot of things in life. Each end of the extremes can be too much, but somewhere in the middle is just right.

Also, from women, men want s*x. That's a very important thing we want from women. s*x s*x s*x. And since your question is about weird standards, I guess it's worth bringing up the issue that men typically want a woman that is not too easy in the first place, before she's with him, so that she hasn't slept with too many other guys. But then once she's with us, we want her to have s*x with us constantly. It's like we want women to be "whores", but only for us.  I know it seems like a double standard sort of weird thing. But perhaps this has to do with the way males are biologically wired to spread their genes as much as possible, while also limiting the spread of other male's genes so that our own offspring  can dominate. This is the reason why male tigers (for example) are known to attack and kill cubs that aren't their own. Each male wants to populate the world with his own DNA. Biologically speaking, of course. In our actual thoughts (at least speaking for myself) spreading my DNA is the last thing on my mind. I don't want to get women pregnant and have kids. I simply get horny and wanna have s*x. No one really thinks about why they get horny. We just do. And we just are all the time.
