Why do men like long hair on women so much?

I recently cut my hair to my shoulders, cutting off several inches. Most men I know hate it, while I get a lot of compliments from women. Maybe they're just trying to be nice, but I think my hair looks better shorter. I'm not dating anyone now, but past boyfriends preferred long hair. I'm 27 years old - I don't want long hair my whole life.

Current cultural mandates won't let them have long hair themselves, so they look to women to do it for them.

Personally I find long hair on women as boring as the standard guy cut. I don't think the shorter blunt cuts are any more interesting on women, but I still compliment the step away from the long-hair cliché.
