  1. To honor her with respect.

  2. It is a noble tradition from an era you may not have been introduced. All persons rise in a court room when the honorable judge is introduced to the forum, you may want to research etiquette.

  3. It's an old european tradition that spread to the world. They stand when a woman leaves or arrives to show her respect and to avoid making her the only one standing. It's quite an old tradition as well. It was traditional for men to honor the "fairer" s*x in such ways. Nowadays, women are veiwed in a role that is less "fragile" and more the same as men, so the tradition is now mainly used at formal diners, to honor female relatives and in-laws, or just when a man feels he is required to do so.

  4. i agree its like this whole old tradition thing, but i don't . if were both not standing than im not getting up lol

  5. It is to show respect for the feminine gender. Ladies to be exact!

  6. its chivalrous, naturally. would you prefer it if men didn't stand to honor you?

  7. Courtesy.

They most likely do this that way the woman does not have to find herself sitting down from a standing position by herself while the man is already seated and waiting.

ps. I love the first answer. Respect is the next best reason.

  8. Mostly you see that in movies, and used to be done for women of power or prestige, like a queen, or Dame, or a woman whose husband owned A LOT of land. There was a time when owning a lot of acreage was a sign of great wealth.

Nowadays, the only place you see such things is in movies about those ancient eras.

Now as for modern day  chivalry, that's much more rare. That would be a guy who opens the car door -- and other doors as well -- for his girl; pulls out and pushes her chair in under her; hangs up and puts her coat back on her -- things like that. He is a very rare creature, but there are a few of them left in America I suppose. Not guys who are trying to impress someone, because that doesn't last long -- sooner or later they see it as being too much work. I'M talking about a guy it  is automatic to, a guy who does it without a second thought -- THAT kind of guy.

  9. So she can check out their package.

  10. It's a greeting, along with respect for ladies :)

  11. they are showing you respect its as simple as that.

  12. defending our wallets  8-P

    HI GEORGE!!!  :-)))

  13. To look down her shirt......

    Even I do it.

I like to play the "real or not real" game.

So it's not out of "respect" (or sexism....whatever you want to call it.. Women shouldn't be treated any better than men)
