assertive behavior gets respect.  when people know that you have opinions, desires, feelings, likes, dislikes, etc., and that you are not afraid to share them, they are less likely to be cold, mean, or disrespectful without reason, explanation, or (most importantly) remorse.  let them know how you feel and don't be afraid to stand by them.

anyone that makes you question your goodness is not a positive influence.

Probably because you let them. If you didn't want to be treated like c**p than don't let them treat you that way. But I don't even know you so i couldn't tell you you're a good person.
