I've heard two schools of thought.  First, guys get 'wood' during the night because blood needs to circulate to all tissues to keep them alive.  Second, an erection makes it almost impossible to urinate so that keeps those little 'accidents' from happening during sleep.  Although, morning wood can cause 'other accidents'! ;)

Nocturnal erections happen during REM (dream) sleep.  The body relaxes allowing blood flow into the p***s. If a man has "morning wood" it simply means he woke up during or slightly after having a dream.  It has absolutely nothing to do with having to pee.  I've woken up many times during the night having to pee real bad and had no erection.  Conversely I've woken up from many 1/2 hour naps with raging b0ners.
