Less drag in the water for swimming and for comfort and support. I usually wear board shorts over them.

because board shorts would be the equivalent of attaching a parachute to you and going for a jog. Speedos (briefs) are made for swimming, are comfortable, and reduce drag.

Think of it this way, should girls wear baggy t-shirts and shorts.
