  1. As others have said, the names are to allow storms to be easily identified.  The names are now maintained and updated by an international committee of the World Meteorological Organization.


  2. The purpose of naming them is to differentiate one from another.  Tropical depressions are numbered but once they reach tropical storm level the receive a name.  The names are alphabetical so you can tell the order of there appearance and the names are changed every year so that the year of the storm can easily be discerned.
