In John L. Sullivan`s time, the rules of boxing was different! Here are the differences

1)They didn`t wear gloves

2)Wrestling was used often and was essential to know in John Sullivan`s time.

3)Boxers trained differently in the bare knuckle era.It was much harder. For example, one training routine was cutting trees for hours.

4)Eye gouging and other dirty tricks were commonly used.

5)Bare Knuckle boxers punched differently. The way they punched(and they punched with a vertical fist.) was designed to give protections to the fists while giving bone-crushing punches.

6)Backfists and hammerfists were allowed

These are only a couple of the many differences bare knuckle boxing has from modern boxing.

Also,it should be noted that John L. Sullivan lost to "Gentleman Jim" Corbett in 1880 because gloves were being used and the rules were modified. For example, by 1880 wrestling, eye gouging, and other techniques were banned.
