Why do more and more women listen to heavy metal?

I hate this music style. My son listens to it and I've been so worried because the main content in the songs is Satanism. And my son dresses in only black and wears pentagrams. I am scared that he will become a Satanist. One thing that I have noticed is that there are far more girls who listen to metal today than there were when I was a teenager (in the 80s). I cannot remember any girl who listened to heavy metal. Today there are not only guys but also girls who dress in all black, dye their hair black, wear pentagrams and worship Satan. Everytime I go to downtown I see scary-looking, witch-like girls with too much black eyeliner and black nail polish. Sometimes they even wear spikes. How come that heavy metal, a masculine music style, has become a girl thing too? And why would a girl want to listen to heavy metal? What are the benefits they get???

We all go through phases. I used to wear long hair, and the clothing styles etc, in the 60's through 80's, and adapted the social hype of the time.I outgrew it in time and can laugh about it now.The important thing to consider, is this something, the satanism, gothic, etc, something that has him confused and is he trying to live a life based on this or is it a fad. Many kids are just living a fad for attention, but some are heading for real trouble. The girls want to be noticed.

I listen to heavy metal and have done so since I was a kid. I don't wear pentagrams or dye my hair black although a lot of them do which is pretty funny. Teenagers will attempt to bond over anything and like any girl in their teen years they want to bond with boys.

Why would any girl want to listen to this type of music? While I have no interest in bonding with pimply teenage boys, I like it. Along with classical music, it arouses my emotions.

I like it because it is masculine actually, while a lot of it is rather noisy to someone who doesn't like it, I find a lot of it to be quite beautiful.

Satan is masculine lust personified.

lol I was that kid. I still love punk and hardcore music. I think you and I are similar in age I'm 36. You are being naive and there were plenty of those kids although it wasn't as mainstream as it is today. I doubt he is going to go and shoot people at school. A lot of those kids are creative and don't mean any harm its just their way of expressing themselves. They don't want to be part of the main stream (I don't blame them) and a lot of the music they listen to have positive messages (War pigs by Sabbath ) and address world issues.(anything by rage against the machine). Relax. If you are so worried read the lyrics of his music. I'm sure he is a good kid and all this will pass. I'm a good Mom, a good person and dress in a very understated way despite my taste in music and style of dress when I was younger.

Because Girls are being subjected to many of the same expectations and responsibities as boys and are begining to reject them in the same ways boys have done for the last 30 years

I guess the simple answer is heavy metal speaks to girls more now then it did in the 80s when boys traditionaly liked it

Not all heavy metal is satanic, the good stuff isn't.  All the stereotypes you give about people wearing all black and being scary, are wrong, there are other factors.  I listen to metal all the time and I own less than three black shirts, I get straight A's, I'm not satanic, nor do I do drugs or anything.  Yeah I'm an atheist, but that started many months before I started listening to metal. How do you explain that?

And about your boy, it's probably just a phase, people who "dress metal" usually grow out of it.  I don't see anything wrong with listening to metal, it's just music after all, it's no different than country.  Would you be worried about your boy going brokeback if he started wearing cowboy hats and chaps?

the catholic church (not roman catholic) coined the term satanism and spread rumors about it during the witch hunts, most of these false accusations abot it are spread by christians who ar etold wrong info on it and spread it like gossip

i am assuming you are talking about trash/death metal in which there are a few christians bands in the type of music

You have a lot of wrong impressions of metal.

First of all, you don't have to dress a certain way to be into metal. Anyone who says you have to wear all black and worship satan has NO CLUE.  Go to a metal show and see how many people are in jeans and t-shirts, and look nothing like your son and his friends.

Second, these kids who claim to be "metal" really aren't metal...Real metal is NOT garbage like Disturbed or Marilyn Manson. Chances are those girls you see in spikes and looking scary have never heard of Dissection, Arch Enemy, My Dying Bride or Testament (these are actual metal bands). Some adult metal fans are actually disgusted with teenagers who dress goth or show themselves off.

Third, there are different types of "metal." It's not just called "heavy metal."  Usually, we metal fans specify if we are into thrash, doom, death, black metal, etc Some doom metal bands like Nightwish have a more melodic and operatic sound to it. Not all metal is a bunch of men screaming.

Look up female metal musicians like Angela Gossow, Cristina Scabbia, Tarja & Annette from NightWish.....These women are like anyone else and aren't scary.

We like metal b/c we just like the music....It's the same reason why anyone else likes music.

Some People Like You May Not Like It, But You Need To Think About It Like This - Think Of A Type Of Music You Like, For Me, Other Then Heavy Metal, It's Pop Music. So, Lets Say You Like It Too. Other People Will Hate It, And Feel The Same Way You Do When They See A Person In Bright Colours With Famous Pop Stars All Over Their Clothes. If He Wants To Be A Satanist, Then You Don't Really Have A Choice.

It Depends On How Old Your Son Is. If He's Something Young, Like 8-13, Try Putting A Stop To His Satanism. But, If He's Any Older Then 13, Let Him. You Can't Choose How Someone Thinks!

Why would I want to listen to metal?

Because it's awesome.

I'd challenge any human being, regardless of their preferred taste in music to listen to the Van Halen Eruption solo and not be blown away.

I'm guessing you're a christian what with your concern of satanism and such.  FYI Christian's listen to metal too.  In fact, there are even several decent Christian metal bands, some of which would be Stryper who has kind of a glam metal mainstream sound, Demonhunter, is a christian death metal band, Deliverence is a decent speed metal band, If he likes thrash metal turn him on to Seventh Angel, the list goes on.

Please open your mind to the possiblity that although the lyrics in many secular bands may be dark and borderline satanic, it's all for effect, shock value if you will.

Whatever the content, bottomline, metal rocks.

I listen to Japanese hard rock and metal...one of the bands i listen to is an all girl japanese metal band.

They dont talk about Satanism.

In fact religion never really pops up in japanese music.

oh by the way.....i wear black ( not all the time) paint my nails black, blue, purple, and sometimes blood red). or not) dye my hair black...And im not a satanist.

Im actually christian. but i dont really follow the standard christian ways.

I believe, i try to live as right as possible. and i try not too be judgemental of those who are different from me.

Heavy metal isn't masculine. I personally don't like it but I have a lot of friends that do. It's just a form of expression. Why does it matter if a person is wearing eye liner, black nail polish, and black clothes? Not everyone who listens to heavy metal is a Satanist. In fact, most aren't.
