  1. Again, it's a matter of personal preference.  However, you should take note that the majority of professional photographers only RENT the equipment to complete their assignments.  It has something to do with ever changing camera technology so professional photographers don't want to tie up their money on old equipment.

    Good luck!

  2. Canon and Nikon make great DSLR's, and they constantly improve their reputation when making great quality cameras.

  3. Jt C has it about right.

Actually the Nikon professional 35 mm SLR camera was introduced in 1959 ... Canon did not have a professional 35 mm SLR camera until 1971 and then in 1988, dumped them for the current Canon EOS professional cameras.

For this reason, there are literally thousands of more good used Nikon lenses available for those who use them.

Most recently, we are starting to see more Nikon's at sporting events for at least two reasons.  First the new D3 has much better performance at high ISO's than any camera in its class (larger pixel size = less image noise) and it is $3,000 less per body with a comparable Canon (1Ds Mark III)

  4. Actually there are probably as many professionals shooting Canon as Nikon ( as a Nikon owner should I say that). Both make to quality digital SLR cameras, and they are constantly improving thier product and adding more lenses and accessories. They both have good customer service and great quality control. Canon started I think in the 30's and Nikon in the 40's. I use Nikon because I started with it in the 70's
