  1. It is too common for people to judge eachother rather than just enjoying.

We live in an overly competitive society, as a result people see too many activities as competitive.  Competition has its place, but it shuld not be omnipresent.  It takes a lot of the joy out of the act, and tries, often unsuccessfully, to replace it with the thrill of competition.

We also live in a society of specialization - people tend to try to find one thing, or a few things, they are very good at, and eschew the rest.

People feel uncomfortable "competing" at something at which they recognize others are better at.  They shy away.  They realize they will not feel the "thrill of victory", and stop looking for the joy that should be inherent in making art.  Some just don't like being judged.

Me, for example.  I am not a good singer - not bad, but not good.  I enjoy singing.  Around others who do not sing well, I will sing.  Around people who do, I am hesitant.  If they seem at all to be evaluating the singing of others around them, I do not sing.

I am a good artist - not great, but very good.  I have drawn and painted all my life.  I married a woman who is much better than I.  Now, I hesitate to do work that might be similar to what she might do.  She is not judgemental, but I still feel it.  I have to make myself do it, and some of the joy is gone.

It is not the lack or existence of skills, it is the way others react to it.  Skills are just an excuse, to keep one from having to be in a position of being judged.

Yes, I am talking of myself, but I see it in others as well.  I also admire people who do not feel that way, although they are rare.

  2. I don't know, I have always found this really odd too. Some people can be so self dismissive about their own skills when it comes to drawing, painting etc. Alot of people say 'I can't draw', but I think everyone has this ability, its just a skill like any other and can be learnt with practise.

  3. Because us non-artists suck at it and when you artist people see this great picture with all the symbolism in it, I see something my kid made when he was painting a picture and then decided to throw paint all over it.

  4. I'm not really sure what you question is.  I am not an artist and can never hope to be one.  I have no problem with others who are artistic and employ them whenever I need artistic talent.

  5. because what they want to paint may be... to much

  6. self conscience probably
