Question:

Why do most people hate this breed of dog?

I asked a question yesterday about what to name my new female Pit Bull/Boxer(?) puppy and several people said stupid things like "lawsuit waiting to happen" and "you shouldn't have chosen that dog". It really makes me mad when people say things like that. I know that Pits have a bad rep because a lot of times breeders inbreed them to get them to look as pure bread as they can, but the entire family of the mother of my puppy is nothing but sweet, goofy sillyhearts that wouldn't hurt a fly and l**k you to death. I've seen more Pits that act like that than agressive ones. My new puppy is a female, the smallest of the litter and I will be taking her home as soon as she can eat puppy food so she will grow up with me. I don't understand why people have to act that way ... not all dogs of that breed are agressive at all.

  1. I think the only way you know its a pittie, is that it would be the 1st one to come up to you and start l*****g your face

ADD: yall are afraid of this?!?!

the last one is the "scariest"

  2. Because people are crazy.

    They are so cute although

I dont have one I hear about them.

    1. so cute!

    2. people abuse them that makes them aggresive.

    3. if you treat them right their nice, if not they're mean, people dont know that.

    5. so cute!

    6. people fight them too much that makes them a bad reputation.

Some of those thigns above were saying why people hate them. and its also showing what people do to make people hate them but i love them!

  3. I don't think a pit bull is the best choice. I mean, a town close to me a pit bull just about attacked an old lady! But I do think it's cruel that everybody hates them. I mean, i think their adorable! And when they're puppies they are so playful and fun. But I don't think I would actually want to take the risk of owning one!

  4. I have had 3. They are lovely dogs. My first one, Maggie Mae did not like any other animals but was smart and loyal. My Lola never had a real good chance at life. She was found on the street and died at about 2. She was sort of a dummy but so loving and kind to every living thing. My Gidget is now  9 months. She is such a silly! Not the brightest bulb on Broadway, but GREAT to take to the dog park or with all the kids around the neighborhood!  She is so loving and loyal and lets us paint her toe nails!  Dont listen to idiots. We have gotten in the habit saying this:

Person:  what kind of dog is THAT?

    Us:  A Good Dog.

My daughter (11yrs) tells people she is a poodle when they ask rudely. You should see the reaction. Classic.

  5. Ahh, but sweetheart.

You're leaving out details of your question.

You got some c**p because you're BUYING a mixed breed from your "friend" thats ONLY 6 weeks old. I'm *sure* your "friend" is a very reputable breeder. *rolls eyes*

It's illegal to have a dog under 8 weeks in most states. I'm pretty sure thats were "lawsuit" is coming from.

    ADD:

    PP-

Yes, but I'm just letting her know most of the answers she got were mocking the fact she's buying a mutt from her "friend".

I find is *SO* funny that this section jumps all over people for buying a "maltipoo", but yet if it's a pitbull mix they Ohh and Aww over it all day long.

Here in Dogs, it's "okay" to call small dogs ankle bitters..but god forbbid hate on Pitbulls.

So you want me to answer?

    Okay.

The reason people *think* pitbulls are agressive is because their stupid and misinformed. The only reason *any* dog is aggressive is due to poor training. It isn't breed specific.

    ADD 2:

Wow, "stfu". Isn't that a little 2nd grade?

I love how if someone hates on "Your" breed you get all pissed..but I recall you not likeing Pugs all the time and I've NEVER gotten pissed at you for it.

    Getting, buying, whatever.

    It's not like it matters.

So she's getting a free mutt?

Still, someone cross bred 2 diffrent dogs and got puppies. How is that ANY diffrent than getting a maltipoo? It's NOT.

Since it's a free pitbull, that makes it *so* much better, sorry for misunderstanding.

    ADD:

LOL. Yeah, pretty sure me and you are the same age.

When you pull that bug thats crawled up your butt out, then we'll talk.

Until then, I'm just laughing at you.

You used to be such a great member...what happened?

Yeah, sure she's getting it and keeping out of the pound.

But, these dogs WERE intentionally bred. JUST LIKE MALTIPOOS.

Just because it's a f'n Pitbull doesn't make it sacred or ANY better than ANY other dog.

Me 'crabbing' up on people has nothing to do with it anymore. I've been pretty nice the past few weeks and I'm sick of people whining and crying over Pitbulls.

Okay, so they're a great breed. WE ALL GET THAT BY NOW.

Everyone has an opinion, and just like no one is going to change yours, you're not going to change theirs.

  6. Because the majoirty of people don't know a d**n thing about dogs.

The majority of people also believe that "most" bites are from pit bulls.

SIX bites per year are from pit bulls. The REST of them are from Poodles, Yorkshire Terriers, Cocker Spaniels, and Maltese dogs.

I have been raising and training pit bulls for YEARS. Most of them (at least 64% of them) were fighting pits that were being rehabilitated. I have only been bitten ONCE and it was because I was pushing the dog past its limits. He didn't even break skin!

People act ignorant and stupid when they fear or don't understand something. I encounter people all the time that say I'm foolish for caring for and loving these animals. They say I'm a moron for allowing these dogs to sleep and play with my nieces and nephews. I'm CRAZY for taking them into my home when they should ALL be destroyed!

Its best if you ignore these people. They feel triumphant when you get so frustrated that you just stop talking. They aren't worth it. Its best just to look over answers like that. And when you meet people like that on the street, just tell them that their child is ten times more likely to wake up and butcher them to death than your pit is to "turn" on you.

I love my dogs, and nothing can change that. No matter WHAT people say, that won't change. I've lost friends, and even FAMILY members have stopped talking to me, but if thats how they're going to react, they're biased and ignorant, and thats fine with me.

Good luck with your dog, and I wish you the best of luck.

Oh, and PLEASE make sure she gets the best of training. It always gives me a wonderful feeling when I'm at the park, and peoples little ankle biters are running around like crazy and I can say one of the dogs' names and they are at my side and sitting down. These dogs are extremely smart, and its such a shame to waste it.

ADD> BFT, that had NOTHING to do with this question. I'm sure you're very proud of your ability to look at other questions, but just answer THIS one.

2> Where in the question did it state the words "BUYING"? I read that question six times and NO WHERE did I see those words. People get angry over malti-poos because they're deliberately bred mutts that people charge $400 dollars a paw for.

    STFU.

3> Pits aren't "my" breed. I don't even own one. This isn't about the breed, this is about your insistent nature to crab up on people so it looks like you're all knowing and intelligent. At least she's getting it and keeping it out of the pound where it would be destroyed for its breed. Malti-Poos are INTENTIONALLY BRED, what can't you grasp about that? And I'll see your calling me second grade when you graduate high school, okay?

  7. People are wary of Pit Bulls for a very good reason....they are unpredictable and attack.  70% of all fatal dog attacks are from American Staffordshire Terriers...commonly called the "Pit Bull".  Dogs are bred for particular purposes and those traits are often very hard to breed out.Border Collies, though shepherding is very rare, are still very good herders, Golden Retrievers and Labs, though mostly used as pets nowadays are still very good Retrievers.  The American Staffordshire Terrier was bred for one VERY particularly purpose and that was to attack and KILL in blood sports.  Their jaws have more foot-pounds per square inch than an African lion.  That instinct to attack, grab with its jaws and hold and crush (most dogs bite and release) is in their blood, while it may not ever come out it often does.  That's why you always here from the owner after a vicisious attack "He never did that before".  Uhhh...duh!  WHY, does anybody (apart from drug dealers and other outlaws) want these hideous creatures has a "pet" anyway?  Get a Golden Retriever or a Lab or a Papillon.

  8. I have heard bad things about pits but sadly I can't believe it because i have met several and they are just so adorable!!!

  9. eww i hate that typ of dog they are so so so ugly. plus they are always staring at you

  10. i think that they're cute but I've seen people freak out at the mention of the word pit-bull! theyre sweethearts, any dog can be trained to be mean.

  11. It is a sad fact that a lot of people stereotype pits, german shepherds, rotties and boxers.

I for one have GSD's 2 of them they are great and I would stand by them no matter what. People follow what others tell them rather then experience things first hand. I like pits, they are a little more high energy then I want but good dogs when raised well.

I had a very good experience with a "bad " pit when I was a kid my mom and I gardened in a common area in the city, there was an old drunk who gardened too and he had two pure breed pits.

Snoopy was sweet and he let me play with him without being worried but he also had a female named Lucy ( I know not very original but what do you expect) Lucy had attacked before and he was always telling me NOT to touch her or play with her.

To make a long story short they were the same size and color and one day I saw snoopy and yelled for him and took off running, he chased after me like he always did and I spun around and sat on the ground just in tome for Lucy to get to me, she had yellow eyes and Snoopy had green, I knew I was in trouble because she was the one that was now eye to eye with me. Snoopy had seen this and was a few seconds behind so he got to me right after Lucy did. Snoopy slowly moved toward me and laid down in front of me and put his head in my lap, Lucy saw this and did the same thing. Both my mom and the guy saw this and came running after us, but by then they realized she was not going to hurt me. From then on I played with both of them and neither one ever got aggressive or hurt me. When they old guy dyed they destroyed the dogs too, we found out after it was too late but he had left them both to me.

Long story I know but I think it is th owner that makes the dog not the breed.

  12. I've got an Akita/pitbull mix and I can tell you he is the sweetest dog ever. People hate them because they don't know any better - the media only tells stories about them attacking people, and ignore the hundreds of stories about them saving peoples lives. It's sad, really.

  13. Just name it what you want to.  If you like that type of dog s***w everyone else.

  14. Most say they're too violent, but I disagree.  If you know how to handle them, they're amazing pets and extremely friendly.

  15. ill be honest with ya they are just mean lookin. but im with ya its all in how you raise them, we have ROTS and they got just about as bad of a rep but they are as friendly with humans and other animals than could be. except for chickens we have to watch them around them, theyve brought dead chickens up to the porch before like look what i got ya. but even with that i think they play with the chicken and dont realize they are hurting and killing it. I wouldnt own a pit bull just because i have young kids and the whole lock jaw thing kinda scares me but hey its up to u just be careful and know your dogs personality well

  16. I love pittbulls. My friend has a pit that is the cutest thing. She raised him normal. Raise your pitt and block out the idiots!

  17. It's because most people who have Pits do not know how to properly train and care for a dog that is strong and very muscular.

Pits lead the country in dog fatalities and home owners insurances generally will not cover a dog attack caused by certain breeds like Pits, Rotts and other dogs that are considered high risk.

Don't be too confident that Pits are really lovable dogs, they were bred for one reason and it sure wasn't to hunt ducks or round up sheep, so they still have that aggressive streak. Most of the time a pitt's victim is a family member or neighborhood kid.

"not all dogs of that breed are agressive at all"

Can you be 110% certain that your dog will not be an aggressive dog? Pitts have a reputation for a reason.

  18. It's because it's in their nature to be aggresive. It does sometimes help if they have a good owner/breeder, but they are aggresive dogs. I've heard of people, who have had them for like 10 years, and then one day they get aggrivated and maul their owner. They're unsteady dogs. So, it is a lawsuit waiting to happen. And you shouldn't have chosen that dog, because if it it attacks someone, it's going to be put down. And thats bound to happen.

Oh, and also, they have a ban on Pitbulls. A year ago they said it's illegal to obtain a puppy pitbull. So...yea. Not good.

My friend has a Pitbull, that she got a while ago, and i was at her party and she said "let's go see my dog" and everyone was freaked out, and i didnt know it was a pitbull, so when we went in to see it, everyone ran, and i had this pitbull bounding towards me. He was very nice, and well treated, but she couldn't control him too well. She was pulling on his ears to get him away from the other girls, and he didn't try to attack her. But she did say that he has tried to before, randomly.

I'm not afraid of big dogs, and this one did freak me out. My dads friend breeds BIG bull dogs, taller than me, when they stand up, and im

5'8. And i'm not afraid of them at all, because it's not in their nature to

just attack. They can be trained to, but their great dogs. That would

    have been a better choice.

Good luck. But, I can assure you, that the dog will probably be put down. Sorry, it's the truth. Poor animal ;[

  19. I can only speak for myself and I don't like Pit Bulls because they have a smushed ugly face. However some of them are more decent looking then others.

Also, I heard they can be dangerous.

  20. To answer your question in a word: IGNORANCE.

EDIT: Hi H, the majority of dog bites are caused by German Shepards, but no one is going to call for them to be killed just because they are born to poor owners.  Like I said before: IGNORANCE.

  21. pitbulls got their names because a long time ago people use to put them in a pit to fight bulls.

i think people hate them because they are known for attacking.

also their faces look vicious and deciving.

    sorry.

  22. because most dog attacks are pit bulls. but there are some good pit bulls. i know someone with a dog like that and she is so sweet she wont hurt a fly. u just have to train her right from a puppy. and they are usually the type of dogs they use in dog fights

  23. Welcome to the club... Its the club of "We love our dogs, and everyone else is completely ignorant of them." Here's the thing, anyone can watch a dreadful story on the news, read some info on an anti-pit website, or listen to some hateful person's rant and form an uniformed, frankly, IGNORANT idea about the breed... But those of us who have been lucky enough to have such a loyal, loving dog in our lives know different. You ask why people hate them and I will tell you that it is for the same reason that people feel they have to hate anything else. I think that hating a dog simply because of its breed is as brainless as hating a person for the color of their skin or their ethnic background. It's just another face of "Prejudice".  See the thing is, people will say they hate them because they are an aggressive dog that can't be trusted, they say they attack children, they say they turn on their owners... Well, I work with animal control I have learned ALL dogs, ALL breeds can bite. The media, for whatever reason, has chosen this breed to exploit and make out to be terrible. Last month we had a black lab tear into the four year old little girl that she had been raised with... I didn't see that on the evening news. Our beloved pit bulls have been made into monsters by the ignorance of a few uneducated people who chose them as a target. Saying all pits are aggressor, is just as stupid and hateful as someone saying all Muslims are terrorists. "Ignorance" is the answer to your question.

ADD: People Like "Lonewolf", "Samantha G", and "HI H" are perfect examples of what I am saying.... "HANN" has the best example of all. She's like ten and thinks she knows all about "bully" breeds. For one, pit bulls are not big dogs, they may be stalky but they are usually knee high or less. And I definitely never saw a bull dog that is tall... The scary thing is that people like these are communicating and spreading their ignorance like the flu. I'm sure your dog is just wonderful as whatever their breed preference is. Oh, in a list of 100 breeds most likely to bite according to LA county animal control this year..... the pit bull came in at #94. Now in a city that is overrun with the breed, that is pretty impressive... People just don't pay any attention to the facts. But I am very happy to see that the majority answering here seem like compassionate, good people.

  24. those dogs suck. no im kidding.

Ive known many pits and all of them have been sweet dogs.

its usualy the small breed dogs that would bite you (even tho it dosnt hurt)

it just shows that they suck and there mean.

Pits are usualy nice. small dogs wont shut up and will usualy bite you =)

  25. I dont know why people act like that. Some dogs are just automatically stereo tiped for some reason, like pitbull, german shepherds, and rottwielers. but what people need to know is that a dog isnt born mean. The dogs attitude depends on there owner. if the owner treats the dog mean the dog will become mean. If the owner treats the dog correctly and gives it boundries, discipline and lots of love and care the dog will become a nice loving dog. I think its realy sad that people stereo tipe dogs like that . Especially pit bulls. i have never met a mean pitbull in my life!

  26. you cant change people's preconceptions of the breed but the best thing you can do to make them realise that not all are the same is by making sure your dog is well socialized and trained so she grows up to be a safe friendly well behaved dog ( which im sure you will do anyway). all the best with your puppy and dont let what people say bother you just prove them wrong

  27. Pit Bull:You will need to buy Insurance-or Bond Money, This Breed would be ok. in the Wilderness, where there are Bear and Cougars;Someday, You will regret owning One---It could be a friend that this dog would Bite or a Neighbor,

  28. its exactly what you said they have a bad rep there the goofiest niciest dogs my sisters year and a half olds best friend is a kitten they play together all the time i think as long as you raise them with love and care they will be really good dogs but if you treat them bad and dont train them they can be aggressive dogs but thats the same with any breed

  29. You are right.  I knew a pit breeder once who told me pitbulls have a very sweet demeanor naturally.  One of the sweetest breeds out there.  It is the irresponsible breeders who have made these dogs so aggressive.  They should have to get thrown in the ring and survive a fight against their star protege. My favorite dog I ever owned was a rotweiler.  I understand your frustration with people misjudging.

  30. Yeah, not all Chihuahuas are yappy ankle biters, either.

Bigotry runs amuck, and there will always be bigots.

  31. That's terrible that people would be like that. Sadly, there are many close minded people out there, so you gotta follow your heart.

ADD: The answer above should learn from the saying, if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all. Dear, enjoy your dog and people who judge your dog based on appearance-don't pay any attention to them. God bless. Don't let haters get under your skin.
