  1. caffeine is a bitter alkaloid found in coffee, soda and tea that is responsible for their stimulating effects

  2. Because most of them made from the nuts, seeds or leaves of these plants are major sources of natural caffeine, such as coffee, made from the Coffea arabica plant; soft drinks, like Coca Cola, made from Kola nuts; and tea made from the leaves of Thea sinensis.

  3. Sodas contain caffeine because they were originally marketed at drug stores as a cure-all medication.

The stimulant was said to help with things like the common cold by speeding up the body's metabolism and thus speeding the body's healing process.

Sodas without caffeine are a relatively new invention and were brought to market to allow those who don't like caffeine to enjoy the bubbly effervescence and sweetness too.

Originally soda was made in the home by adding a syrup to carbonated water that was stored in a special "seltzer bottle," but the invention of stabilization and canning technologies allowed consumers to enjoy the beverages without all the hassle, and so soda became a more casual drink than a medication.
