Why do mother in laws have to be so awkward?

My mother inlaw entered our bedroom and caught me and my wife in a mood of love and stated, Well, I never, to which I stated come off it you must have, how did she get here,

Yes  True  but my ma in law was lovely    ,   My own mum died  and she was really like a mum to me  ,,,  Her grand kids idolised her.   Never had the sort of experience you had   ,,, She wouldn't have come in  the room  anyway...

Because, unfortunately, the person their child married is very rarely good enough for them in their eyes, and it gives them someone else to whinge at instead of their partner.
