Why do moths always fly into the light?

They always fly into lights and sit on or around them, why is it? Is it the heat

  1. It's the light itself.  Moths use moonlight for navigation.  I've read about this before and I don't recall the details very well, but basically they're able to navigate by flying toward the Moon.  When they see a local light source, they mistake that for the Moon, and fly toward it.  And since they're not the smartest of Nature's creatures, they keep flying toward it even after they bounce off it repeatedly.

    They lack vitamin D and so think that the lamp is the sun

    imagine before man, when there were moths, what kind of light would they see at night?... the moon

    they think it's the moon and want to travel in that direction
