Question:

Why do my Highlights want to turn orange-ish?

Every time I do my own highlights, (I know i shouldn't, I can't afford them professionally at the moment) they turn like a reddish orange? When i used to get them down at the salon, they came out a real nice tan blonde, with no brassiness. I have olive skin, and ash brown/blondish hair. What can I do?

  1. You may not be leaving the solution in long enough. don't leave it in longer than recommended but if you're not leaving it in for the longest length of time recommended add a few minutes next time.

Colorists usually use toner after the color to take the brassy color out.

I do my own highlights and have really good results. The first time I got the orange but left it in 5 minutes longer the next time, used toner and it's been great since.

  2. Either you didn't leave the bleach on long enough or you need a stronger bleach.  Are you using a drug store kit or products from a beauty supply store?  Go to a beauty supply store, buy a powder bleach and peroxide that is AT LEAST 30 volume.  Leave it on until you see no more orange.  Then follow up with a toner (Clairol Creme Toner is a good one, as are the toners by Wella.) with a violet or blue-violet base.  These will counteract the warm tones.

  3. professional hair stylists have a technique and they highlight hair differently then those boxed products that tell a person to just rib it in and there you go... you naturally wouldn't be able to do it the way the professionals do it because it would be very hard for oyu to do it for yourself...  on the times when you can't afford it let your hair not be highlighted.. on the times that you can go to the hair salon and get it done

  4. Well first if you don't actually have any idea what you are doing (ie haven't gone to beauty school) you really shouldn't be playing around with bleach/hydrogen peroxide in your own hair.  Leave it to the professionals.

Second, hair goes through an orange/brassy stage before turning blonde.  Your styleist could be adding a dye to your hair after bleaching it, or you could be forgetting to bleach your hair first.  Or you might not be applying enough heat to your hair for a long enough time while the bleach is in your hair.  Any of these could be possible.

But really, if it works out well when you go to a stylist, you really should keep that up or let them grow out.

  5. Well there you go, you answered this yourself YOU ARE DOING THEM.... Please go to a professional stylist, but if you don't want to listen let them lift longer your hair is going threw many stages to get to blonde.....
