Why do my baby squash wither and fall off even when the plants look healthy and hydrated?

  1. Over watering or just the opposite, under watering. it is a delicate balance and also, the amount of space that you have given the squash to grow. It has to be healthy loam compose soil, well drainage, and well fed but a huge combination of all that will kill the baby squash.


  2. If they were only partially pollinated they will fall off.....no bees or weather too hot and dry.  Also sucking insects do a number on them.....such as squash bugs.  Too much rainfall can also cause them to abort.

  3. I had that problem, and then I started going out in the morning to manually pollinate the male and female squash flowers with a small paint brush.  It works, but it seems a bit silly and annoying to have to do that.  I guess I don't have a lot of bee action in my garden.

  4. I believe it's called fruit drop and it's caused by poor pollination.   Another thing is called "blossom end rot" but you usually know this one if the fruit rots from the blossom end.  Contact you local extension agency for more info.
