There's not a day without my birds hanging on top of their cage, just kind of looking frozed. :/

Its like they're sleeping with their eyes open.

What are they doing ?

  1. Two possibilities: Firstly, they may be afraid of something in or out of the cage and are trying to feel safe by climbing to the highest part of the cage. Did you add a new toy recently that may be scary? Do you keep a night light on at night so it is not too dark? Sometimes if it is too dark they can get scared and become disoriented.

Secondly, some birds just like to sleep this way and are very comfortable at the top of the cage, upside down!

How to tell the difference? If they flutter around or are breathing heavy, they may be afraid. If they are just 'hanging around' the top of the cage, they are comfy and are enjoying it.

  2. do you cover them at night? sometimes they will do that for a few mins then settle back into their sleeping perches..check out http://parrotcentral.net/parakeets.htm for good parakeet info

  3. I have seen this happen often with caged birds ,they seem to choose the top of the cage & hang upside down ,in what looks to us as terribly uncomfortable .If they seem well rested in this position there is no need to worry about it,however if it would make you feel better to see them use a perch, try a covering on the cage at night.Make sure weather conditions are suitable & the cage is free from a draught .
