  1. new filters ASAP

  2. Betya have one of the newer HE type washers like the Calypso types or front load types. I bought a set and returned them before the warranty ran out and got a top loader with an agitator. I hate them and they make your clothes smell like mold. Put "moldy smelling clothes in front load washing machines" in your search engine. You will find that it is a very common problem. Too bad you've had them for 2 years. You're stuck with them.

  3. Not put in dryer quick enough, horrid smell when they have been left in washer too long, and you HAVE to wash them again, (sometimes twice - if you can add a teaspoon of bleach to remove odour)  Happens more with older washers that don't spin as well as say a fisher paykel does (I miss mine), the damper they are the quicker the smell will arrive.

  4. Do they go in smelling that way? If so then your washer is overloaded.

  5. If you are using a low cost detergent, that could be it.  It may not be cleaning as well as some of the other ones.  Switch detergents.  Or, use more detergent.  Either way, your clothes are not getting as clean as they should.

Also, if you leave your clothes in the washer for over a day, then the bacteria that is left in them has a chance to build back up and will stink.  Drying the clothes does nothing to get the smell out.  You have to re-wash them.

  6. The use of low temperature washes and detergents fails to kill off the bacteria in the washing, it is there after wearing it, and the dryer reactivates the bacteria as they like the warm and damp. Suggest that you sometimes put the machine to a hotter wash, within the recommended temperature of course, with a little more detergent, this will stop the musky smell.

  7. dear donmusta, what filter?? Washers and dryers do not have filters.  Are you drying your clothes in the furnace??

It is a combination of things.  Since so many people suggested you are leaving your clothes in the washer too long it's easy to tell they did not read your whole question.  You said you do not do that but put them in the dryer right away.  You also said your machines are only two years old yet your problem is one common to older washing machines.   It sounds like your washing machine may be harboring old water.  It could also be the detergent you are using, as someone suggested, the store brand or cheaper. Try Cheer with a color-safe bleach alternative for several loads, and use a liquid fabric softener in the rinse cycle.  Frustrating problem for sure. Good luck with that.
