Question:

Why do my contact lenses seem too weak?

I've wearing glasses for about 6 years and recently I went to my optometrist for my first pair of contacts. I tried them my first week and noticed that they aren't as clear as my glasses. The main problems occur when I'm watching TV, on my computer, or driving at night. I visited my optometrist and she told me my eyes are just too dry, even though they don't feel dry at all. She tried to see if a stronger prescription would help (by placing lenses over my eyes) but they just came up worse. So she gave me eyedrops for contacts and yet I still see the same. With the contacts in, I can see better than my naked eyes but not as good as I do with my glasses.

  1. Vision with contacts is often not as sharp as with glasses.

Soft lenses do not have a fixed shape.

You may still have 20/20 vision even though the contacts are not as sharp as your glasses.  Tear supply has something to do with it.

  2. Sounds like the wrong prescription.

    Try another optometrist.

  3. Here is another issue that you may be experiencing if you astigmatism that is too low to correct with a toric contact lens.

Toric lenses usually start at a cylinder of .75 diopters.  If a person has anything less than .75 then they are prescribed a spherical lens even though their eyeglasses may contain a correction for astigmatism.

The result is that a person's may vision may not as sharp as they are accustomed to with eyeglasses and it may appear a little cloudy even though they will still pass a vision test.

My contact lens prescription is a little lower than my eyeglasses prescription because the toric contact lense is not made in my actual cylinder prescription so I notice my vision is slightly clearer in my glasses.  I do not mind the slight difference.

  4. that's weird

i had that problem too, but not constantly like you

maybe contacts aren't for you, then again it could be the brand... ask your optometrist if maybe you can try a different one for your benefit

    good luck!
