I have 2 male dogs, a poodle mix and a chinese pug who are constantly growling at each other and occasionally get into fights..there is no stopping them once they start..if you try to break it up or touch them, the go ballistic..they never hurt each other..but it is very bothersome. Is it possible that if I get them both neutered that this will stop? The poode is 9 years old and the pug is 8 years old.

  1. Well that would deffinatly be a start!!!

  2. I would strongly suggest looking into a pet behavior specialist. They will be able to asses your dogs and either give you advice on how to work with them to stop it or train your dogs how to behave with each other. If they are already 9 and 8 years old neutering them probably won't help any. There is also an age limit to do neutering, I don't know the age but you might want to check on it.

  3. They definitly need neutered and that will calm them down some. The problem is that they are trying to dominate eachother and establish which is pack leader.

  4. Well, why not try putting them in different pens for a while

  5. It sounds like a pattern has already been set up and they're fighting to gain dominance.  Have you discussed this with their vet?  That might be the one to talk with.  Get yourself a squirt gun and squirt whichever one is growling BEFORE it turns to them fighting.  I think neuturing them would have to stop some of their aggressive nature.   More importantly, you need to show them that you are the alpha and they don't need to be.  Grab the aggressive one by the neck and give him a shake and tell him "no."  You shouldn't let this go on any longer.  One of them is going to get hurt.

  6. It certainly can't hurt to get them neutered at this point, and it might have an effect to lower the aggression.  But it also is a learned behavior at this point that needs a firm hand to nip it in the bud.  The key is to have them both respect you as the authority figure, so that you're able to maintain control before the fight starts.

They should be kept separate with no access to each other (either in crates or gated in different rooms) when you're not home.  And when the growling starts, you'll have to step in with a stern warning to each, send them to their spots in a down-stay.  Your message has to be that this behavior is not tolerated.

  7. Yes!! get them neutered. Their sexual aggression cannot help. Is it possible that they are playing? Mine seem like they are killing eachother by the noises they make, but they are acutally playing

  8. Neuter them
