The older one is 3 and the younger one is 5mos, both shih-tzus. Is there a particular reason why they do this, and should I punish them?

  1. To a dog, the smell emanating from another dog's ears is very appetizing.

  2. because they're ear-fetish

  3.      I've had dogs for over 20 years, and they all licked each other's ears from time to time.  It is a form of grooming and affection, but you should try to keep them from doing it too much, because the l*****g causes the inner ear to be wet, which can cause infections.  If you notice an odor and your dogs start scratching their ears alot, that means they have an infection.  Which means they need to go to the vet for ear meds.

  4. They are grooming eachother

  5. Their grooming each other as they are members of the same pack

  6. Why on earth would you want to punish them?  Dogs sniff and l**k each other in different places all the time its one of the ways in which they communicate with each other.

  7. Can be pack behavior, but I would have a vet check the ears on the receiving end to ensure there is not an ear infection present.

  8. OH no, don't punish the dog. The older dog is taking care of the younger dog.

I had a male that always cleaned the female's ears & I have a 10 year old Doberman that cleans the 4 year old mutt's ears.
