  1. It's not just your eyes, it's your over all body language.  Learn to read body language and interpret what certain things we do with our body mean, then work on confident body language so you can bluff your way through future situations.

You're giving out loads of unconscious signals that indicate how you're really feeling, you've just got to watch out for them, and change them.

Just a few body language cues that reveal how you're really feeling/if you're lying involving your eyes include the size of your pupils (dilation), amount of eye contact and which way your eyes are looking (i.e. when telling a lie, you usually look a certain direction that is opposite to when you tell the truth).

  2. The eyes do not tell it all.  As stated above, there are a number of reasons others may be able to read your behaviours, (1) some people make lucky guesses.  (2) Another such technique that was extremely popular during the 1960's drug culture was behaviour modification.  In every setting there was present at least one person who manipulated the situation, i.e., the group.  Such person is termed the facilitator.  When individuals associate, over time, they become friendly with one another.  This association leads to the members letting down their guard with others, they relax.  When this occurs, it is very easy to understand each members behavior, i.e., what that person will do in any given situation.  (Read Stanley Milgram's Obedience to Authority)   (3)  Non verbal behaviors.  Each person, in a non task oriented group setting, has, or acquires, a certain status (read Street Corner Society, by L. Foote White, and Talley's Corner) as compared to others within the group.  Given that individuals play roles, and that individuals may move between and among such roles, they understand the norms and values associated with those roles.  Thus, when someone appears to understand your behaviour it is because they have effected that behaviour themselves at some point in time.  (4)  Experience.  As one ages, more and more roles have been attempted, roles unavailable to younger group members.  Such roles allow for, and contain, additional information (data) about lower status roles.

As one encounters more roles, statuses, and experiences (legal hopefully) this "self consciousness" will dissipate over time.

  3. Because there is one such thing called body language.

Your spoken or written words may not been in line with your intention but your body is created to go in line with your intention.

Body language can be studied & many NLP practitioners as well as the policemen are very good at it.

  4. Eyes tell a lot and if you talk to police interagators, they will tell you that they watch the eyes (as well as the entire body) when questioning an accused.

Remember President Clinton on TV making a statement:

"I never had s*x with that woman" . . .when he said it, he looked away.  His eyes gave him away.

This is not so on hardened career criminals
