Why do my heels hurt when I wake up ?

When I get out of bed in the morning or up from sitting for a long period of time, my heels hurt when I walk for about one minute. Why?

My wife has this, but I can't remember what it is called and she is asleep. She wears an ankle splint each night. It works. See a foot doctor.
