Why do my ice skates hurt me?

I am learning to ice skate. I am using a package which includes skate hire from the ice rink. The first 2 wks my feet really hurt on the toes. So i thought i better get a bigger size. then i found that my toes didnt hurt but it felt like the blades were digging into me. It was like trying to skate on pieces of glass.

I tried changing boots but it was so bad that even after a couple of seconds i was in agony. My teacher suggested that i put foam in the boots to cushion them. i put over an inch of foam in but it was just as bad as before.

I managed to pass my 1st grade but i dont want to buy some boots until i know why I am in so much pain.

  1. That's probably because the skates don't match you. And besides hire skates are not good. They're really bad cause they're old and a lot of people have already worn it.

That's why you have to have your own skate shoes. The shoes depends on if your doing figure skating, speed skating, Ice dancing, or just normal Ice skating. If you go to a skate shop the shop keeper will propably help you to get the right shoes for you. I don't know how much it costs for other skate shoes but for figure skate shoes it costs atleast $500 and for the blade I don't know how much it costs but yea you have to pay for that too.

Then you have to buy plastic cover and a material cover for the skates. And you have to rub oil on the skates once a month or maybe more will be good. After you get off the Ice if your skating more you have to put the plastic cover on the baldes and then walk or the blades will scratch. When you finish skating wipe the blades with clean towl and then cover it with the metirial cover.

I don't know why but my figure skating coach told me that it's not good to leave your skates under the sunshine.

Anyways if you keep using hire skates it will really hurt your feet and it can corse some injuries. So I suggest instead of keep using hire skates it's better to buy the shoes now. You know I used to learn figure skating with hire skates and it really hurt but I kept using it. And then one day I twisted my ankel, and I couldn't skate untill my feet was completely ok.

Oh and I forgot, when you buy new boots it takes about 10 days untill the boots get's softer. So untill 10 days don't try to do hard tricks or your feet will start to bleed. It's true cause my sister injured her feet with her new skate.

  2. well, as a figure skater at a high level, like full jumps, you need to get good quality skates, like Ridell, try getting custom fit boots, they are  exspensive, but they fit you and you try them on to make sure they're comfy, it may be that your feet are sqeezed in them, try going to a skate shop at a rink and ask for them to be heated in the oven, put them on with whatever you usually wear under your skates and leave it on for 15 mins, then they will be molded to your feet. hope this helps and keep practicing at skating

  3. Unless you get expensive boots, dont expect them to be any different. And since ur a beginner it seems to be a waste if you got expensive ones. You could just be getting used to them, or if you are skating in them often you could be breaking them in. Try giving them about 1 month, if they still hurt get a new brand, try reidell.

  4. Honestly, skate hire boots are ALWAYS going to suck. They killed my feet. Basically, they are made out of as cheap material as they can find. You could try wearing thicker socks and more foam, but if you plan to continue you should invest in some of your own skates to prevent butchering your feet. They are not only more comfortable, less yucky, as you are the only person who wears them, and better looking, the blades and boots will be good. The blades will be sharp and not orange with rust, so they won't slip, and the boots will offer support enough so that your ankles don't keep rolling about.

    Good luck!

  5. I think that maybe you need to wear thick socks. my skates always kill me and i wear super thick socks! it helps
