Why do my kittens like to eat their kitty litter when we change it out!?

It's really weird, and none of our other cats have ever done it before. And we've had A LOT of cats in the past. Should I be worried?

  1. Its normal for kittens to do so

the important thing is not to use the clumping type litter, or Silica litter.

as it would cause problems to their stomach

use normal litter, the best thing for your kittens since they are eating the litter is the re-cycled paper cat litter .

if it happens that you are already using the clumping litter , contact the vet to make sure they are ok

    Good luck

  2. I have not heard of this before actually. Have you tried changing the brand of cat litter that you buy?

Or when they eat it, bring them over to food so they know what to eat.

How old are they? Are they possibly very young and confused at the first time away from Mummy cat?

Hope this help, it's a head scratcher.

  3. Yes, you should be worried.  But don't panic.

If you're using clumping litter you're going to have to switch.  This type of litter can be very dangerous if ingested.

I would consider a change in any case.  This isn't behavior you want to allow to continue if it's possible to stop it.  So perhaps trying a different brand of litter will help.  And of course be sure to stop them if you see them doing it.

Perhaps it's just kittens being kittens, but when adults eat litter it can be a sign of something wrong.  Not necessarily fatal - but perhaps a quirk like Pica or it might indicate a nutritional imbalance.

  4. your kitten is a kitten.....and has lots to learn still.

  5. To be honest, if it were clumping litter I'd be a bit worried. I'd personally give the vet a call on this one.

  6. dont worry its just something kittens like to do when it gets older it will stop doing that
