Why do my lovebirds wet the newspaper i put in the cage?

everytime a put newspaper in my lovebirds cage so that they could put it in their nest they put it in their water why? can someone help me

    You may not think so, but just be glad they aren't dumping their food or water on the floor outside their cage, like a lot of parrots do for "fun". My cockatiels would actually rip the newspaper lining out of the bottom of their cage so they could put it in their water--paper and water seems to be a common element in parrot entertainment.

    If they don't have enough toys, or the right kind of toys, they may simply be looking for something to do, and plunking bits of paper into the water is their best solution. If this is the case then I'd recommend going to the pet store and finding some shreddable toys. These take time for the birds to work on, which keeps them occupied.

    And/or you could just not give them newspaper. If they dunk it in the water I think it's pretty safe to say that nesting isn't on their minds right now, you can take it out and try offering it again in a week or two.
