Why do my speakers work when im listening to emails but not when i listen to itunes and windows media player??

i have tried fixing my speakers earlier this week! but nothing is happening! about 5 minutes ago i was looking at an email and it started playing music! so y wont it work for itunes or windows media player?? (i made sure it wasnt muted btw) please help! thanks in advance!

double click on the speaker symbol in the bottom right hand corner and make sure that their all up
