not all of them. but i've had like one last that said it and this year my english teacher said. i was presenting a project about what i want to do with my life and i said i wanna be a teacher. she said no you don't cuz then you have to worry about your studnets having s*x and doing drugs on the weekend. of course everyone laughed and i did myself. before she has said that she loves her job a lot. iono maybe she was just kinda kidding, but just letting me know what it's really like at the same time. then she someone else got up there and said they wanted to be a teacher, and she said no you don't.

  1. Any teacher that discourages a child from wanting to be one too is not happy with their own choice of careers. I wouldn't listen to her. If you want to be teacher, then go for it! And as far as worrying about all those issues, yes, teachers do worry about their students and care about them, but that shouldn't keep you from wanting to make a difference! Our country NEEDS good teachers who care. That being said, you also have to conduct yourself in a professional manner and understand that students are children and teachers are adults. Many adults cross that line and try to be "friends" with the students. My motto as a teacher was: I can be friendly, but I can't be your friend". As long as there is that understanding, then you will be ok.

  2. I don't think a teacher should be discouraging you for taking up the same profession.  However, she sounds like she really cares about her students and their well being.  Working as a teacher probably pays considerably less than other jobs where you could use a hard earned degree.  But, if you are passionate about it, you should do it.

  3. Follow your heart. When you do what you love you its never work.

  4. Even though she is right, she shouldn't be tearing down your dreams.

On the other hand, kids DO need to know the truth about this horrible world.

What kids do on the weekend is none of her business.

What she SHOULD have told you is that there are a LOT of bad things about being a teacher.

    1. NCLB law keeps teachers from TEACHING anymore, they can't do what they love to do.

    2. Kids are out of control because of parents who don't make their kids behave, and schools don't either because if they did, they wouldnt' get money from NCLB.

    3. Teachers can't teach because they have to be police and baby sitters.

There are SO many other reasons. No wonder MOST teachers quit within 5 years.

I have to let you know, though, that MOST jobs out there are bad. You just have to put up with c**p.

I don't sugar coat the adult world for my kids. I tell them how it is and try to help them before they get out there.

  5. There are a lot of easier ways to earn a living.  Teaching is hard work.  The state Department of Education is always finding ways to make more work for you, as if you don't have enough already.  Everybody thinks your job is easy and that they could do it better than you. ( They can't) You have to deal with demanding parents, most of whom fit into the previous category.  For nine months of the year you have no life outside of school.  That big summer vacation is now usually spent going back to school so you can keep your certification.

Its like the old slogan for the army -- "It's the toughest job you'll ever love."  If you are thinking about being a teacher because It seems like an OK job, go find something else to do.  If you have never considered being happy doing anything else go for it.  Joseph Campbell says "Follow your bliss."

  6. Because education has sadly gone down the tubes. Many teachers dislike what they are seeing and want to keep others from dedicating their lives to this profession. Based on my experiences, and the experiences I have seen my fellow teachers have during my 3 years as a teacher, I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.

  7. Every job has its disadvantages.  Maybe your teacher is sharing what she considers some of its teaching's disadvantages.  Ask her to share some advantages.

  8. Teacher's work long hours and usually take work home with them.  A person doesn't get into the teaching profession for the money, but rather because they care about people.  They worry about their students, and I imagine that was what your teacher meant.

  9. While teaching is a very rewarding career, it is also extremly  stressful.  Your teachers, of course, know this, and they want you to be happy.  I don't think they necessarily want to keep you from teaching, they just want you to know it's not all hearts and flowers...there is a LOT of work involved.   However, if you feel that is what you truly want to do, I think you should go for it.  I personally love my job, even though it can be terribly stressful and full of politics.
