Why do my video games look bad on my new high def TV?

OK, my family purchased a 37 inch high definition LG tv like 4 months ago. I decided to, for the first time bring my playstation 2 from our old standard definition TV downstairs (around 20-25 inches) to the new TV upstairs, thinking the games would look alot better. Instead they looks worse and really fuzzy. Games that looked pretty good on our old TV look fuzzy and blurry on the newer one. Does anyone know why this is? Or is there a special setting im missing? Please help!!!

  1. All digital TV's will handle digital signals pretty well, but some digital TV's handle analog signals better than other digital TV's.  I bought a sony model specifically because they got very good reviews at handling analog signals.

I vote with the "settings" thought - there probably are settings to improve the signal.

The cables angle has some merit, as this is analog.  However, if they are the same cables as you used on the old tv, they ought to do "ok" with this tv too.

Maybe the best improvement is if you can use component cables instead of the yellow/red/white RCA cables (one for video and 2 for audio).  I don't remember how that option works with the PS2.  Component is the one with 3 for video and 2 for audio.

  2. Hi Vassili - good question.

Which brand of LG did you buy?  The LG brand is pretty good, so if there's fuzziness...well...first of all, I don't have a PS2, so I don't know how you connected - I can only assume you're using the AV inputs.

One of the things you can check for sure is the settings on the TV - some TV's have settings specifically for games and sports - go into the menu or look for the manual.  The PS2 games should be outstanding, not fuzzy.

Try that and get back to me!

  3. Just because your TV is High Def does not mean your cables are.

PS2 does not support HD (which you obviously knew that) however, you should still have a better picture.  Dependant on how old your "old" TV is you may not notice a difference.

Also cables are a BIG deal.  Lower quality cable lower quality the image.

That said even if you had top of the line HD cables your gaming with the PS2 would Not EVER be HD gaming like it would with the PS3 or XBOX360.  Also the quality of the image of the games you are playing may not (will not) be the same type of image quality in those of the 360 or PS3.

Also take into consideration what MJ (the guys that posted after me) said.  I would say the same thing but no use repeating it.  Chances are it is like he (MJ) said.
