Question:

Why do my well-struck, penetrating iron shots still have such a high trajectory?

For example, my well-struck 5-iron shot looks like a powerful and clean 7-iron shot in terms of trajectory and distance. It will fly on a piercing high trajectory and fall at about 165 yds. I know I'm not scooping the ball..I used to have that problem but I've gotten over that by really lagging the club head and hitting down on the ball, and the ball is really starting to explode off the clubface. I know trajectory can be a subjective observation, but in my case it's pretty obvious. I have a feeling the answer has something to do with hitting "through" the ball as opposed to hitting "at" the ball...maybe I need to continue to accelerate my hands through the hitting zone in order to maintain lag and de-loft the club(?) I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced a similar problem/phenomenon? I guess I could get passed this problem by, for example, playing a 7-iron where a normal player would use a 9-iron, but I'd always know that something was off about my swing. Thanks!

  1. you may have maximum game improvement irons , with the ball balloning possibly callaway , which do have a extreme low kickpoint shaft . try to make a motion trough the ball , with the feeling your left wrist is pointed at the ground . or try a friends irons that are not so sole weighted . it is not your swing , good luck thank you

  2. The answer lies in your question. You are hitting down on the ball, and with a good wrist release action through the hitting zone causes a high trajectory. In my teens through early fourties I hit a high trajectory. I now have had wrist and shoulder surgeries and wish for that high trajectory. My swing is more sweeping now than upright or a steep downswing. Play around with the idea that you are not going to make a divot. Sweep the ball off the fairway this should lower the ball flight. A flatter swing plane.

  3. Technology for the most part.  What kind of irons do you use?  What is the loft and lie angle?  A well struck shot will net a high trajectory.  This is a good thing.  One thing to not get caught up in is how far you hit the ball as opposed to someone else.  I noticed that I was losing distance on my iron shots.  At least I thought I was.  What I found was that I was not making solid contact and that was the reason I wasn't hitting the ball as far as I had previously.

  4. it could be the shaft of your clubs. you could be swinging hard enough that your shafts are whipping, causing you to hit it high. if that is the case then get stiffer shafts. like if you have graph shafts go with steel instead.

  5. If your hands are ahead of the club face at impact then the loft on the club is greater. This can happen if you shift your weight forward too early.
