  1. Oh... That's just something from popular ninja stories in Japan. The ninja in these stories would grasp their fingers together and mutter "doron, doron" to disappear.

This is related to 'in' (mudra) from mikkyo (esoteric buddhism), which are a part of a way to focus in meditation. Each mudra would relate to a different aspect to focus on (strength, courage, calm, etc.), and each would have a mantra associated with it to aid in their meditation. Most of the time, however, they weren't necessarily held at that height, but wherever is comfortable -- comfort is paramount in meditative practices.

  2. Hi there

stslavik has given you a rather good explanation. Unfortunately when it comes to ninja the media haven't got a clue. All they do is give you the pop culture image which is so far from the truth its funny. As stslavik has already mentioned what you have seen in the movies is kuji in or kuji keri. Its basically a form of quick triggering meditation that can be found in eastern religions such as shinto and mikyyo. Its got nothing to do with magic, floating or turning one self into frogs! Nor will it stop someone from giving you a smack in the gob if you choose to perform it in front of them. Its about psychology and how a physical action can creating a positive thought or feeling. Its very rarely seen in modern ninjutsu but it can still be found in some of the traditional forms that are practised today.

Kuji is something that many westerners have great difficulty understanding. But it has nothing to do with fighting unless its hidden within movement and that's a more complex matter to try and explain here.

Kuji also exists in traditional japanese medicine such as amatsu and reiki.

    Best wishes
