  2. Exactly the same reason any boat floats: The boat's density, when you take into account the space inside the hull, is less than that of water.

The reason I understand is that the outer shell of the vessel holds back or displaces the water and the as air is lighter than water the area of water displaced gives buoyancy to the ship, this is proved by the fact that if water replaces the air in the vessel as when a ship is torpedoed  then the weight  of water entering the vessel or ship, and replacing the air,  the vessel is then no longer buoyant, and sinks.

      This can be proved by putting in water, a metal basin that leaks, the water replaces the air displaced and it will eventually sink.
