  1. Good question,

I have seen a lot of it and I even asked them ,they told me that it will protect the fabric from getting dirty .

  2. To prevent it from accumulating dust..

most of their furniture was like velour and got dusty and they didn't have those fancy vacuums with all the attachments.

Plus they wanted it to keep new for as long as possible.. they just didn't throw things away because it got old. My Mom had cloths on everything then she washed the clothes. When you think about it we vacuum now to prevent dust mites.. it would certainly stop them from accumulating on furniture.

  3. OLD people don't.  They know it's tacky.

Back in the 70's, EVERYBODY did it because it was a fad.  Thank goodness the fad has gone!

  4. To keep it clean because they work their butts off to buy nice things and they take care of them  so they don't have to buy it again. People now days don't take care of anything and they make companies rich by buying things over and over waste of good money in my opinion. but then I'm old hahah I just cover mine with a throw that I can take off and wash more comfortable

  5. old people leak

  6. It was done a lot when I was young. My parents did it for a number of reasons. Pets, kids in diapers, kids spilling stuff on furniture. Money was tight even back then and they wanted to make their furniture last. It is an investment. Mostly the seasoned people do it because the younger generation really don't know it can be done. They probably had it on there for years and just never took it off. It really helps esp.when you have a lot of kids and pets like we did growing up.

  7. That my friend, is an excellent question. I think it could be because they don't want to wet the couch or something. But who knows.

  8. Because back in the 50's-60's it was the "in" thing to do to preserve your furniture and keep it clean and pristine.  It was more of a fad and the fact that only "old" people do it now, is because they did it when they were younger and to them it is the correct way to make furniture last.

  9. I thought of doing that, but only to see the look on my sisters faces! I would do it so people would think I am very strange and weird. That would be the only reason I would, but I really wouldn't. They used to put plastic on sofas and things to keep them clean for as long as they could trying to prolong the life of the furniture. Guess they never heard of getting some soapy water and a wash rag and washing them off once in a while.I wash my own,yes allot of work, but that is fine with me. My furniture still looks new all the time. You can also pay to have them cleaned, but who has the money now a days?I think that was the thing to do in the olden days, but I wouldn't know for sure,I'm not there  and don't plan to be anytime soon! Byee

  10. To keep it clean.

BUT why would you buy a nice soft fabric sofa, then put vinyl on it?  Just buy vinyl!

Why cover your beautiful soft rug with plastic?  Just buy linoleum!

Why not wear a plastic raincoat over your mink coat to make it last?

It's ugly and defeats the purpose of having comfortable stuff, that's why.
