Question:

Why do old people?

Drive so awful? People always say it's teenagers that can't drive but I find old people much more dangerous on the road. They drive 20 miles under the speed limit, they cut you off without looking, and they swerve. Has anyone else noticed this?

I'm not trying to be rude and take away their freedom but it's putting their lives and others at risk.

  1. older people drive because it helps keep them independent, when they lose that sense of independence, they feel like they are helpless

  2. lol...its true buh down here....they also drive the nicest cars and even then go around 30 on a 100kmh road...god who gave them the licence!!!

  3. See, I don't mind them going 20 under the speed limit.

They are going slow enough that I can pass them without a problem, also when they swerve or cut you off as you, since they are so slow its not a problem, I see them coming.

Why are teenagers always getting told they can't drive, simply becuase when you are young and dumb, you do dumb things, pull out in front of stuff, park illegly, etc. etc.

Honestly, old people aren't the worst, teenagers aren't the worst either, thats like stating ALL of a certain type of people do this, like do all Koreans think Black people are going to steal from them.

    Its stupid and arrogent.

Your question should be, why do some people drive like a big rubber cod peice.  Thats what you should ask.

  4. As people age, their reaction times slow and they are not as aware of their surroundings. A lot of them (especially elderly men) are prideful and cannot admit that it's time to hang up the keys; they do not want to be considered feeble and helpless. Many simply do not have another mode of transportation and are afraid they won't be able to continue their lives a certain way if their driving privilege is taken away.

Oh, and gomanyes, driving too slow IS dangerous! When someone operates a vehicle traveling 10-20mph under the posted speed limit, they are deemed a road hazard and could be cited by a police officer if pulled over.

  5. because they're OLD????

you'd move slow too if you were almost dead.

    its called wear and tear

  6. Well, statistically teenagers cause more accidents than old people.  Driving too slow isn't dangerous, no matter what anyone says.  Driving too fast is.

And also, you are generalizing too much.  There are some young people that drive too slow as well,  and of course when an old person drives well you wouldn't even notice.

  7. Granted some old people drive bad just as some teenagers, some orientals, some whites, people with cell phones, some women, and some men.

But don't condemn everyone in one group just because you see a bad driver that happens to be in that group. That's called profiling and prejudice.

I know it seems to be true at times but that's how stereotypes begin.

Some older drivers shouldn't be on the road, but there are many teenagers out partying who shouldn't either. But we can't condemn them all because of it.

Also consider the time and place you are driving. Older drivers tend to avoid the freeway or driving at night where speeds tend to be higher. But there are times when they can't avoid it and may cause a nuisance because they are driving too slow or suddenly stop. Just the same, younger drivers avoid the surface streets but of course find times when it can't be avoided. They too can cause a hazard because they drive too fast and make quick lane changes.

We all just have to look out for one another and relax a little.

The most we have to lose is the few extra minutes it might take to get somewhere. But at least we would get safe and sound.

       Happy driving!

  8. Hey, I resent that!!!  I'm sixty (almost sixty-one) and I don't drive "20 mph under the speed limit, cut people off" and never "swerve"!!  There are folks who do all of the things of which you speak; however, to generalize and say, "Why do old people ...."? is a calumny.

There should be mandatory retesting after sixty (which I support whole-heartedly, even though, as I said, I am of that age group), which might screen out those drivers who are "unsafe at any speed" (Sorry, Mr. Nader!).  As people age, several changes occur which affect their ability to operate a motor vehicle.  Their eyesight, hearing and reflexes all change (not for the better) and in some cases their judgment and depth perception is worsened.

However, as I said, it is unfair to criticize all older drivers.  Good luck!

  9. You're not being rude, you're just stating the fact.  Many elderly people DO drive terribly.  It's because of all the changes that occur as we grow older (diminished eyesight, lack of coordination, etc.).  And just try and imagine after years and years of driving that you have to give up that freedom because your driving skills have gone down the hill - probably takes a long time to acknowledge that fact.  Just as hard as it takes convincing teens that they will not have full depth perception and coordination until they hit the age of 23... meaning they're driving skills aren't all that much better than old folks.
