Why do our stomachs get bigger when we breathe in?

  1. Because the lungs are getting bigger and pressing down on the stomach.


  2. Our rib cage does not expand as freely

    or with as much efficiency

    as our stomachs.

    So natural breathing is from the belly.

  3. Because of improper breathing technique. If your body is in a relative straight (not slouched) position, the air will go to your lungs only.  Any other position will cause the lungs to push against the diaphram, which in turn pushes against the stomach causing expansion. With practice, you can inhale the air, keeping your diaphram in place and not expand your stomach.
