People have been poisoned by drinking too much water or eating too many carrots.  Over-the-counter medications are deemed safe only if used as intended (internal or external, etc.).  They may cause eye irritation and even damage the liver if too much is taken within a given period of time.  When a doctor prescribes a medication, he/she should be aware of all OTC medications and supplements that are also being taken because of possible interactions that lessen or strengthen the desired result.  Many OTC medications were originally prescription drugs until side effects and doses were better understood.  Always direct usage questions to a pharmacist when taking more than one medication.  Always read the warning labels.
